Since the 1970s the Brain Tumor Group of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) has pioneered groundbreaking protocols in the management of brain malignancies. Formed in the early 1990s, the European Association of Neuro-Oncology (EANO) was created specifically to further knowledge in the speciality of neuro-oncology. In March 2009, these two groups held the first in a series of joint conferences to be held biennially. Titled “Trends in Central Nervous System Malignancies,” the first EORTC-EANO meeting was held in Budapest, co-chaired by EORTC Brain Tumor Group chairman Martin van den Bent, MD.* In this brief CME-accredited audio interview, radiation oncologist Minesh Mehta, MD, reviews the highlights of this historic conference with van den Bent and fellow EORTC-EANO participants neuro-oncologist Roger Stupp, MD, and neurosurgeon Frederick Lang, MD. This fascinating interchange with world-renowned leaders in neuro-oncology touches upon such vanguard subjects as cognitive rehabilitation, markers for prognosis and diagnosis, personalized treatment, and emerging therapies.
